Kat Stockton is an Atlanta-based contemporary artist working across painting, mixed media, drawing, and installation. Her practice explores identity, memory, perception, and the systems through which meaning and value are constructed.
Moving between intuitive and highly considered processes, Stockton creates work that occupies a space between the familiar and unknowable. Organic forms, repetition, layering, and constructed systems become ways of examining how we organize and understand experience.
Her current research considers questions of value, collective belief, and authority, who determines significance, how consensus forms, and where seemingly objective systems reveal themselves to be deeply human.
Stockton is currently pursuing an MFA in Painting at the Savannah College of Art and Design in Atlanta, where her practice continues to evolve through research, material experimentation, and engagement with contemporary art and cultural institutions.
Background
Before turning her focus more fully toward contemporary art, Stockton spent more than a decade working across animation, illustration, advertising, and art direction. Her professional career included fifteen years in television animation, where she contributed to the Emmy Award-winning series Archer and numerous other productions, progressing from background illustration into art direction.
Stockton has also spent more than five years freelancing commercially as a designer, illustrator and art director for various companies in the Atlanta area.
That history continues to inform her studio practice through an interest in constructed environments, visual systems, narrative, and the movement between digital and physical ways of making.
Stockton is also the co-founder and Creative Director of 404FoundATL, an Atlanta-based arts platform creating accessible exhibition opportunities and building connections among artists, audiences, and the city's broader creative community.
She lives and works in Atlanta, Georgia.
